Like so many of us, I was introduced to Challenged Children’s Rodeo by founding member Carole Wilhite. We became friends through our love of two things: rodeo and photography. I was not aware that groups like CCR existed, but it was a joy to experience the first time I came out to volunteer my time as a photographer. I have been hooked ever since.
It’s hard to describe the emotions that simply overwhelm you when you see the heartwarming interaction between rodeo cowboys and our special kids. To most people, rodeo cowboys are tough, macho and maybe a little crazy, but in the arena with our kids, they prove themselves to be gentle, caring souls, who make a day in the life of a special child something they will never forget. Probably one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen is a macho rodeo cowboy hopping around the arena on a stick horse with his CCR partner. What a sight! Our rodeo queens bring a bit of western glamour that obviously dazzles the kids. The girls love the “bling” and colorful outfits and the boys sometime fall a little bit in love. The tenderness and joy that these cowboys and cowgirls display towards the kids is hard to describe. This is why I do this year after year: the emotion never goes away; the amazement never goes away. The kids keep coming and so do their wonderful rodeo partners.
Challenged Children’s Rodeo is a staple in the city of Norco and a very well respected group, with a great deal of support from the community.
As an organization, we are very proud of what we do and I am very proud to be a part of it.
